Production took place in February 2010 over the span of one weekend. The outdoor night scenes were shot guerrilla style with a Canon 5D mkII on top of Twin Peaks and at the bottom of Potrero Hill in San Francisco. All indoor elements were shot on RED through the help of the kind folks at Autofuss. The majority of post production was done in after effects, cinema 4d, final cut, and relied heavily on the plugins from trapcode and red giant software. (ie. Starglow, Particular, Knoll LE, Mojo)

Intel contacted me over the summer to see if i would be interested in testing their i7 core extreme processor.

Basically I could create anything I wanted and they would feature it on their site and interview me about my experience with the processor.

Concept:

Wall Crawl is a study of movements which are used to visualize sounds and create experimental motiongraphics. It was inspired by Lionel Ritchie’s music video “Dancing on the Ceiling” where a room was rotated on a 360 degree axis. No storyboards were made for this project. My only plan was to push the processor as much as I could, animate to the music, and change my techniques after every 8-count.

All work was done in After Effects, footage was shot on an HVX200

special thanks to: Kirsten Rietchl who helped with the concept, Dalia Burde for producing the shoot, Roger Guillen and PJ Koll for use of the footage and Goodby facilities.

Music by Plastiq Phantom

Some info on the project:

The crew consisted of 5 people (3 animators) including myself. From concept to delivery was about 3 1/2 weeks. Lisa Mishima created the boards and a majority of the concept. In the end we decided to shoot almost all the elements practically and composite them in after effects. We used a combination of stop motion and live video shoots. My contribution was the middle of the animation, specifically the transformation of the insect into the bird, including the pins. I also did the ink pass and created the animatics for timing. Chris Kelly did the intro all the way through to the insect, as well as doing the beauty pass, and locking down the tempo of the entire piece. Colin Trenter created the bird and took on the daunting task of assembling all of the individual sections into one master comp. Nick Brown kept us fed and on schedule, and tried not to have a heart attack when we posted the final animation 10 mins before the deadline. In all, it was a wonderful project and it helped me remember why I do motion graphics in the first place.

There is no formula for creative process. It is fluid and transient, allowing singular thoughts to merge and evolve in unexpected ways. The Experiment conveys the evolution of an idea in the form of an organism.
